Maryland pediatrician convicted of sexually assaulting patient; 65 other charges pending

A Maryland pediatrician was convicted Nov. 1 of sexually abusing an 18-year-old patient he had treated since she was an infant, with 11 other victims alleging abuse, according to WTOP.

Ernesto Torres, MD, was convicted of second-degree assault and fourth-degree sexual offense of a patient. He was found not guilty of second-degree rape because he did not use force during the assault.

Dr. Torres, 69, admitted to police that he may have inappropriately touched the patient, but it was not intentional, according to ABC affiliate WJLA.

Authorities say since his initial indictment, 11 more victims have come forward and the pediatrician has since been indicted on 65 other charges, including nine counts of child sex abuse. The allegations span back 35 years, starting after Dr. Torres opened his solo practice in Frederick, Md., in 1979.

Sentencing for the two convictions is set for December.
