Disaster response team nurse says Dorian recovery will be long

Brian Halpern, a nurse at Seattle-based Virginia Mason Medical Center, says the Bahamas were "wiped out" from Hurricane Dorian and are "going to have lots of needs," according to KOMO News.

Mr. Halpern is a member of a federal disaster response team supported by the National Disaster Medical System. The team provides medical care before and after disasters. Mr. Halpern told KOMO News that they treat everything from open wounds to diabetes, attempting to stabilize patients as much as possible.

When Mr. Halpern arrived in Puerto Rico Aug. 27, Dorian was predicted to hit the middle of the territory. However, the storm changed course and swept through the Bahamas, causing mass destruction.

"I'm pretty worried about the islands there because they were wiped out," Mr. Halpern told KOMO News."They're going to have needs for food, for water, for medical supplies,."

He said recovery from Dorian would be long, but there's a strong willingness to help.
