American Academy of Pediatrics urges European travelers to get MMR vaccine

The American Academy of Pediatrics said healthcare providers should "highly suspect" measles among travelers who report illness after returning from Europe, which is seeing a record number of measles infections.

Like in the U.S., low vaccination rates are fueling Europe's rise in measles cases. From January to June 2018, the World Health Organization's European Region reported more than 41,000 measles cases and 37 deaths — the highest number since the 1990s.

AAP is urging Americans to get vaccinated against measles before traveling abroad, per CDC guidelines. Children between 6 months and 11 months should also "receive an early, additional dose if traveling to measles endemic countries," the group said.

AAP shared their recommendations in an article published in Pediatrics.
