6 Factors of Physician Engagement in Patient Experience

At the Becker's Hospital Review Annual Meeting in Chicago May 9, Nancy Vish, president and CNO of Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital in Dallas, discussed engaging physicians in the patient experience.

Ms. Vish said key factors of physician engagement in the patient experience include the following:

•    Culture of physician leadership and accountability
•    Shared goals
•    Transparency
•    Enhanced communication
•    Shared actions for improvement
•    Shared celebrations

She also shared some examples of engaging physicians at Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital. For instance, posting patients' comments from satisfaction surveys attracted the attention of physicians who were performing less well, and motivated them to improve. In addition, providing physicians data on practice variance and establishing committees to determine practice standards helped engage physicians in quality, according to Ms. Vish.

"Everyone plays when talking about taking care of the patient and making care safe," she said.
