The following healthcare mergers, acquisitions, partnerships and general transactions took place or were announced during the month of January.

1. Florida Hospital withdraws bid to operate Sanford Burnham: 5 things to know
Orlando-based Florida Hospital reportedly pulled its bid Jan. 30 to acquire La Jolla, Calif.-based Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute's research facility in Orlando.

2. Cleveland Clinic to take over Florida hospital
Leaders of Vero Beach, Fla.-based Indian River Medical Center selected Cleveland Clinic to assume control of the county-owned hospital Jan. 30.

3. Erlanger receives OK to acquire first hospital outside Tennessee
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System received the final approval necessary to  acquire Murphy (N.C.) Medical Center on Jan. 25.

4. Loyola Medicine to buy Tenet-owned Chicago hospital for $270M
Maywood, Ill.-based Loyola Medicine filed an application with the state to purchase MacNeal Hospital, a 374-bed facility in Berwyn, Ill., for $270 million.

5. Care New England, Partners to enter into definitive agreement to merge after nearly 1 year
Providence, R.I.-based Care New England and Boston-based Partners HealthCare agreed to enter into a definitive agreement to merge Jan. 25.

6. Dignity Health secures new contract to manage California hospital
The San Andreas, Calif.-based Mark Twain Health Care District board approved a 30-year management lease with San Francisco-based Dignity Health Jan. 24.

7. MU Health Care, Boone Hospital end exclusive negotiations: 3 things to know
Columbia, Mo.-based MU Health Care and Boone Hospital Center, also in Columbia, decided to pause exclusive discussions regarding their proposed partnership, the organizations jointly announced Jan. 25.

8. UHS to terminate management agreement with Texas hospital
King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services decided not to lease North Texas Medical Center in Gainesville and will cancel its management agreement with the hospital May 1.

9. Equity firm submits winning (and only) bid for bankrupt Arizona hospital
Green Valley (Ariz.) Hospital CEO John Matuska said Jan. 22 he was not surprised the hospital attracted only one bidder.

10. Mount Sinai Health System to affiliate with South Nassau Communities Hospital: 4 things to know
The boards of trustees of New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System and Oceanside, N.Y.-based South Nassau Communities Hospital announced their intent to affiliate Jan. 24.

11. Sanford Health to expand into New Zealand, Vietnam, Costa Rica, 2 other countries
Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health revealed plans to expand its international presence by establishing partnerships in five new countries and increasing its presence in two others, the health system announced Jan. 23.

12. Rite Aid divests 625 stores to Walgreens
Camp Hill, Pa.-based Rite Aid has completed roughly 30 percent of its planned divestiture to Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens Boots Alliance, Rite Aid officials announced Jan. 22.

13. Cabell Huntington agrees to compromise on proposed St. Mary's merger, end legal fight
Cabell Huntington (W.Va.) Hospital officials said Jan. 23 the hospital has agreed to work with one of the strongest opponents of the hospital's proposed merger with Huntington, W.Va.-based St. Mary's Medical Center, ending a pending four-year legal challenge.

14. Hospital authority approves sale of Georgia hospital to HCA
The Chatham County Hospital Authority approved the sale of Savannah, Ga.-based Memorial Health and its flagship hospital, Memorial University Medical Center, to Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare on Jan. 22.

15. Dutch company acquires UPMC subsidiary Via Oncology
Elsevier, a data and analytics company based in Amsterdam, acquired a Pittsburgh-based UPMC subsidiary that develops decision support guidelines for oncologists.

16. LifeBridge Health signs letter of intent to integrate Maryland hospital
The boards of LifeBridge Health, a four-hospital system in Baltimore, and Elkton, Md.-based Union Hospital of Cecil County signed a letter of intent to merge Jan. 18.

17. UC San Diego Health, Eisenhower Health expand cancer services
UC San Diego Health and Rancho Mirage, Calif.-based Eisenhower Health signed a five-year affiliation agreement to expand cancer services to residents in the Coachella Valley this month, UC San Diego Health announced Jan. 11.

18. Franciscan Alliance, Methodist Hospitals end merger discussions
Gary, Ind.-based Methodist Hospitals and Mishawaka, Ind.-based Franciscan Alliance ceased discussions on a potential merger, the institutions announced Jan. 11. The organizations had been exploring the potential union for about one year.

19. Tenet exits Philadelphia with $170M sale of 2 hospitals
Tenet Healthcare completed the sale of its last two Philadelphia hospitals: Hahnemann University Hospital and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

20. Brown University, Prospect Medical to make rival bid for Care New England
Providence, R.I.-based Brown University is joining with Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings to challenge Boston-based Partners HealthCare's merger with Care New England Health System in Providence, R.I.

21. OHSU, Adventist Health Portland affiliation goes into effect
Portland, Ore.-based OHSU and Adventist Health Portland officially integrated their clinical activities and services under an agreement that went into effect Jan.1, the organizations announced Jan. 8.

22. Penn Medicine finalizes acquisition of Princeton HealthCare
The Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania Health System completed its acquisition of Plainsboro, N.J.-based Princeton HealthCare System Jan. 9.

23. Tenet to divest Missouri hospital
Tenet Healthcare entered into a definitive agreement Jan. 5 to sell St. Louis-based Des Peres Hospital and other Tenet-owned physician practices and hospital-affiliated operations in the area to St. Luke's Hospital, a 493-bed facility in Chesterfield, Mo.

24. UnityPoint Health-Des Moines affiliates with Grinnell Regional: 3 things to know
UnityPoint Health-Des Moines (Iowa) and Grinnell (Iowa) Regional Medical Center, in partnership with the Iowa City-based University of Iowa Health Care, announced their finalized affiliation Jan. 3.

25. Tenet, Baylor Scott & White restructure joint venture: 4 things to know
Tenet Healthcare and Dallas-based Baylor Scott & White Health signed a definitive agreement to dissolve a joint venture the two health systems finalized two years ago.

26. Illinois OKs BJC HealthCare's 2-hospital takeover plan
The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare's petition to gain control of two Illinois hospitals Dec. 29.

27. SSM Health completes sponsorship transfer of 2 Wisconsin health facilities
St. Louis-based SSM Health and the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes completed the sponsorship transfer of two Wisconsin-based health organizations Jan. 4.

28. UNC Health Care finalizes purchase, rebrands bankrupt North Carolina hospital
Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care completed its purchase of bankrupt Eden, N.C.-based Morehead Memorial Hospital Jan. 1.

29. Bozeman Health buys private practice at Big Sky Resort
Bozeman (Mont.) Health finalized its acquisition of The Medical Clinics of Big Sky (Mont.) Jan. 1.

30. Real estate investment trust sells 20 Genesis facilities for $103M
Sabra Health Care REIT on Dec. 22 completed the sale of 20 skilled nursing facilities leased to Kennett Square, Pa.-based Genesis HealthCare.

31. CoxHealth completes acquisition of 6th hospital
Springfield, Mo.-based CoxHealth finalized the acquisition of its sixth hospital — Lamar, Mo.-based Barton County Memorial Hospital — Jan. 1.

32. St. Luke's University Health Network, Blue Mountain Health finalize merger
Blue Mountain Health System, a two-hospital system in Lehighton, Pa., finalized its merger with St. Luke's University Health Network, a seven-hospital system in Bethlehem, Pa., Dec. 31.

33. Hackensack Meridian Health to combine with JFK Health, become largest health system in NJ
Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health revealed plans to combine operations with Edison-based JFK Health Jan. 3. The merger will make Hackensack Meridian the largest health system in New Jersey.

34. ProMedica finalizes acquisition of Michigan hospital
Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica completed its acquisition of Coldwater, Mich.-based Community Health Center of Branch County Jan. 1.
