Several health systems have kicked off May with updates on hospital, outpatient and specialty care expansion projects as organizations continue investing in growth and access expansion.
The projects — which span emergency care, rehabilitation, pediatric care and outpatient services — represent more than $1.4 billion in disclosed investments.
Here are eight updates from health systems on capital projects in May:
1. Marriottsville, Md.-based Bon Secours, part of Bon Secours Mercy Health, broke ground May 12 on a $200 million expansion at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Va. The project, expected to open in 2028, includes a four-story, 144,000-square-foot patient tower that will expand emergency, women’s and critical care services.
2. Birmingham, Ala.-based Encompass Health said May 11 it plans to build a 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Post Falls, Idaho. The freestanding hospital, expected to open in 2028, will serve patients recovering from stroke and other neurological conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic issues.
3. Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health said May 11 it plans to build a community hospital in Wilmington, N.C., pending regulatory approvals. The proposed hospital, targeted to open in 2030, will be built on a 62-acre site.
4. OhioHealth and Nationwide Children’s broke ground May 6 on a $38.4 million outpatient care center in Ontario, Ohio. The 42,000-square-foot facility will be housed on the OhioHealth Ontario Health and Fitness Center campus.
5. Munster, Ind.-based Powers Health said May 5 that it kicked off construction on an $80 million, five-story outpatient center on its Community Hospital campus in Munster. The 125,724-square-foot center will comprise physician offices and outpatient services, including cardiac rehabilitation, imaging, infusion, neurology, physical therapy and noninvasive cardiology procedures.
6. Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare opened its $235 million HCA Florida Gainesville Hospital May 5. The 90-bed, full-service medical and surgical hospital is the first to open in the region in more than half a century.
7. Nashville, Tenn.-based Ascension St. Thomas, part of St. Louis-based Ascension, said May 5 that it will break ground on Ascension St. Thomas Clarksville (Tenn.) Hospital, a full-service hospital, in June. The $148.5 million project will anchor a 96-acre integrated healthcare campus. The campus will include physician partners Tennessee Oncology, Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, Ascension St. Thomas Heart and Howell Allen Clinic, along with a Montgomery County Emergency Medical Services station.
8. Clearwater, Fla.-based BayCare Health System kicked off the first phase of construction May 12 on its Pagidipati Children’s Hospital at St. Joseph’s. The facility, scheduled to open in 2030, represents a $650 million investment and will serve as BayCare’s new children’s hospital in Tampa, Fla.
