Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health is seeking to build a new community hospital in Wilmington, N.C., pending regulatory approvals.
Six things to know:
1. The proposed hospital will be built on a 62-acre site and is targeted to open in 2030, according to a May 11 health system news release.
2. The hospital will offer specialty services including cardiology, oncology, neurosurgery and obstetrics. UNC Health said the facility is intended to expand access to primary and specialty care in New Hanover County and surrounding communities.
3. The system plans to propose the hospital through the state’s certificate-of-need process in an application that will be submitted June 15.
4. Ernie Bovio, who joined UNC Health in April as regional president of the Southeast Coastal market, will oversee operations in the region, including Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, N.C., and guide long-term strategic planning efforts.
5. UNC Health comprises a statewide network of 20 hospitals and serves patients across all 100 North Carolina counties. The system has trained physicians in the region through the UNC School of Medicine Wilmington campus and plans to build on those existing partnerships.
6. Wilmington Health, the largest independent, physician-owned practice in southeastern North Carolina, said its providers are expected to participate on the medical staff of the proposed hospital.
