The month in moves: 20 healthcare CEO changes to know

The following hospital and health system CEO moves were announced or implemented in the past month, beginning with the most recent.

1. Gary Gottlieb, MD, will step down as president and CEO of Boston-based Partners HealthCare in July 2015 to lead Partners in Health, a nonprofit organization that provides medical care in impoverished counties. Dr. Gottlieb has led 10-hospital Partners HealthCare since 2010.

2. Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health announced the retirement of Frank Nask, president and CEO, upon the completion of his contract on March 31, 2015.

3. Paulette Evans, RN, was named president and CEO of Hospital Sisters Health System St. Joseph Hospital in Breese, Ill. She has served as the hospital's interim president and CEO since June.

4. Christine M. Candio was appointed president and CEO of Chesterfield, Mo.-based St. Luke's Hospital, effective January 2015.

5. John Marshall, CEO of Dickson, Tenn.-based TriStar Horizon Medical Center, announced plans to retire at the end of the year. Mr. Marshall joined TriStar Horizon as CEO in December 2002.

6. Palmetto Health and the University of South Carolina, located in Columbia, announced the appointment of Les Hall, MD, as the first CEO of the Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group and executive dean of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.

7. Fort Mohave, Ariz.-based Valley View Medical Center appointed Fred Capozello, MBA, CPA, as CEO, effective immediately. Mr. Capozello served as the hospital's CFO since January 2014 and as interim CEO since August.

8. Mitch Leckelt, MBA, was appointed CEO of Ishpeming, Mich.-based Bell Hospital after serving as the hospital's interim CEO since July.

9. Pottsville, Pa.-based Schuylkill Health announced the appointment of Marc Lory, MPA, as interim president and CEO.

10. Jim Sexton, MHA, was appointed interim CEO of El Paso (Texas) Children's Hospital.

11. Robert Cannon will assume his role as president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis on Dec. 1.

12. Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota will have a new CEO come Dec. 8, when Robert Bonar Jr. assumes leadership of the state's largest pediatric system.

13. Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health appointed David C. Herman, MD, as CEO and member of the board of directors. Dr. Herman will join the organization in early 2015.

14. Margaret M. Van Bree, DrPH, was appointed president of Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, the largest hospital in the Providence-based Lifespan health system, and its pediatric division, Hasbro Children's Hospital. Her position is effective Jan. 5, 2015.

15. Houston-based CHI St. Luke's Health System named David Argueta, MBA, president and CEO of its Woodlands area facilities, including The Woodlands Hospital, Lakeside Hospital and the Springwoods Village Facility.

16. Garry C. Faja, regional president and CEO of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in Ann Arbor, Mich., announced he will retire at the end of the year.

17. Rochester (N.Y.) Regional Health System named Eric Bieber, MD, president and CEO, effective Nov. 1.

18. Michael McEachern was named the permanent CEO of Bowie (Texas) Memorial Hospital.

19. Joseph Trunfio, PhD, president and CEO of Morristown, N.J.-based Atlantic Health System, announced his retirement.

20. Newburyport, Mass.-based Anna Jaques Hospital President and CEO Delia O'Connor announced plans to retire at the end of this year. Mark L. Goldstein, the hospital's executive vice president and CFO, will take over as CEO as of Jan. 1, 2015.
