31 CIO moves affecting health IT in 2019

Becker's Hospital Review reported the following CIO moves affecting hospitals, companies and federal agencies in 2019.

1. The Senate confirmed James Gfrerer as CIO and assistant secretary of IT for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

2. Phoenix-based Banner Health selected Deanna Wise to serve as CIO.

3. SSM Health, a nonprofit health system based in St. Louis, named Sony Jacob CIO.

4. Quest Diagnostics combined its chief information and digital officers into one role and named Gabrielle Wolfson, former Xerox Corp. CIO, to the role in February.

5. Norwalk, Ohio-based Fisher-Titus Health system hired Linda A. Stevenson to serve as CIO.

6. Cambridge (Mass.) Health Alliance selected Brian Herrick, MD, to serve as CIO.

7. Macon, Ga.-based Navicent Health named Omer Awan chief information and digital officer.

8. FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner Amy Abernethy, MD, PhD, was appointed in April as the agency's new acting CIO.

9. The U.S. Department of State appointed former Johnson & Johnson executive Stuart McGuigan permanent CIO.

10. Broomfield, Colo.-based SCL Health selected Craig Richardville to serve as CIO.

11. Huntington, W.Va.-based Mountain Health Network named Dennis Lee CIO.

12. University Medical Center of El Paso (Texas) selected Ray Davis to serve as CIO.

13. Batesville, Ark.-based White River Health System appointed Jeff Reifsteck assistant vice president and CIO.

14. Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis named Maria Russo CIO, a new position.

15. HHS chose Jose Arrieta to lead IT efforts as CIO.

16. The Queen's Health Systems in Honolulu, named Harold Moscho vice president of information technology and CIO.

17. Rockledge, Fla.-based Health First appointed William Walders CIO.

18. Corpus Christi, Texas-based Driscoll Health System named Justin Box vice president and CIO.

19. Andy Crowder became senior vice president and chief information and analytics officer at Charlotte, N.C.- based Atrium Health.

20. Blanchard Valley Health System in Findlay, Ohio, appointed James Wellman CIO.

21. Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health named Marcus Shipley senior vice president of innovation and CIO.

22. Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health appointed Suja Chandrasekaran to serve as senior executive vice president and chief information and digital officer, a newly created role.

23. North Kansas City (Mo.) Hospital appointed Kristen Guillaume vice president and CIO.

24. Fort Myer, Fla.-based Lee Health selected Rick Schooler to serve as CIO.

25. Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, S.C., selected Michelle Edwards to serve as CIO.

26. Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Ind., named Mathew Gaug vice president and CIO.

27. Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health promoted CIO Ben Patel to executive vice president, bringing him into the senior-most leadership team at the health system.

28. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education selected Bruce A. Metz, PhD, to serve as its first CIO, effective in January 2020.

29. Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic recruited John Halamka, MD, away from Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he serves as CIO.

30. Stephanie Reel will retire from Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins in July 2020 after three decades as an IT leader there.

31. Penn State Health selected Cletis Earle to serve as senior vice president and CIO for the Hershey, Pa.-based health system and Penn State College of Medicine.
