A look at Amazon’s healthcare playbook

Amazon has spent years trying to break into healthcare, and while some bets have fizzled, the company’s footprint in the industry is still expanding.

Amazon has pursued that goal through a mix of acquisitions, launches and experiments, not all of them successful.

The company bought One Medical in 2023 to deepen its push into primary care and expanded Amazon Pharmacy as a consumer-facing prescription business, while AWS has become a major technology vendor for health systems and life sciences companies. But Amazon has also pulled back from several healthcare bets, including shuttering Amazon Care and winding down its Halo health tracker, underscoring how difficult it can be even for a tech giant to gain traction in healthcare.

Here is a look at Amazon’s most recent healthcare moves as reported by Becker’s since January:

  • On April 21, Amazon launched a new weight management program through Amazon One Medical that integrates primary care, pharmacy services and virtual care to support patients using GLP-1 medications.

  • On March 5, Amazon Web Services launched Amazon Connect Health, an artificial intelligence tool designed to automate administrative tasks for health systems and improve patient access to care.

  • Amazon Health Services named Keith Shah, PhD, its new chief network officer.

  • On February 10, Amazon One Medical rolled out Health Insights, a new beta feature designed to help eligible members better understand routine blood test results through personalized analysis and recommendations.

  • York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health will be migrating its entire technology infrastructure to the cloud through a partnership with Amazon Web Services.

  • Amazon One Medical rolled out an AI chatbot that automatically connects to patient health records. Health AI can help answer health questions, schedule appointments and manage medications, and can triage patients to a virtual or in-person visit if needed.

  • In January, Amazon’s One Medical and Cleveland Clinic opened their second collaborative primary care office. The office follows the October opening of the organizations’ first joint primary care site in Northeast Ohio.

  • On Jan. 1, Chicago-based Rush University System for Health announced a partnership with Amazon One Medical to expand access to primary and specialty care.
