Amazon Web Services has launched Amazon Connect Health, an artificial intelligence tool designed to automate administrative tasks for health systems and improve patient access to care.
Here are six things to know about Amazon Connect Health:
- The tool integrates with electronic health records and is intended to reduce administrative workloads and improve patient access to care, according to a March 5 AWS press release.
- Amazon Connect Health uses AI to manage several administrative processes, including patient identity verification, appointment scheduling, medical history review and clinical documentation. The platform is available around the clock and can book appointments in real time while patients remain on the phone, the release said.
- If a situation requires staff intervention, the system can transfer interactions to human employees based on customizable rules set by health systems.
- Health systems that have begun deploying capabilities from Amazon Connect Health have reported operational improvements. UC San Diego Health, which handles about 3.2 million patient interactions annually, reported: saving about one minute per call, redirecting 630 hours per week from patient verification to patient assistance and reducing call abandonment rates by 30%, reaching up to 60% in some departments.
- The platform also supports clinicians during and after patient visits. With patient permission, the AI can transcribe physician-patient conversations and draft clinical notes for provider review in real time. After visits, the system can generate after-visit summaries and medical codes for billing, linking each code to supporting documentation for auditing purposes, according to the release.
- Amazon One Medical has already implemented ambient documentation capabilities tied to the platform across more than 1 million visits and plans to expand into intelligent medical coding this year, AWS said.
Amazon Connect Health is the first AWS solution built specifically for healthcare providers, according to the press release.
