10 hospitals planning facility upgrades, expansions

The following hospitals announced plans to expand, upgrade or renovate their facilities in the last week.

1. MedStar Health's new heart hospital to open later this month
MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., part of Columbia, Md.-based MedStar Health, completed its MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute, according to a Washington Business Journal report.

2. St. Joseph's Regional scraps plans for hotel, conference center
St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, N.J., is forgoing plans to build a 14-story hotel and conference center on the hospital's remaining acre of undeveloped land, The Record reports.

3. Mayo Clinic to add 2M square feet to research footprint
Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic plans to add 2 million square feet of research space in less than 20 years as part of its plan to build up the downtown clinic as a destination medical center, according to the Star Tribune.

4. After closing due to flood damage, Williamsburg Regional picks site for new hospital
Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree, S.C., determined a site for its new facility, The Kingstree News reported. WHR had to close its doors in February following flood damage, though it built a temporary emergency room outside of the empty facility. A temporary hospital will open in October.

5. President of Illinois Christian college plans $40M hospital
The founder and president of Morthland College, a Christian college in West Frankfort, Ill., wants to build a $40 million hospital in Benton, The Southern Illinoisan reported.

6. Mayo Clinic Care Network expands to Middle East
American Hospital Dubai will become the first Middle Eastern healthcare organization to join the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

7. Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital launches $14M renovation
Mercy Health-Cincinnati began a $14 million renovation of its Fairfield (Ohio) Hospital, according to the Journal-News.

8. $394M expansion of UVa Medical Center's ED to begin June 8
Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Medical Center began an 80-bed expansion of its emergency department June 8. The university's board of visitors approved the three-year, $394 million project in March 2015 in response to high volumes and cramped conditions in the hospital's ED, according to The Daily Progress.

9. Nebraska hospital to construct $29M new building
The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved funding to build a new facility for Syracuse (Neb.) Community Memorial Hospital. 

10. Iowa Methodist Medical Center unveils multi-million-dollar ED
The William C. Knapp Emergency Department and Trauma Center at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines opened June 7.
