The following healthcare mergers, acquisitions and general partnerships took place or were announced in the month of November.
1. Blackstone to acquire TeamHealth in $6B deal
The board of TeamHealth, a Knoxville, Tenn.-based physician services organization, unanimously approved an agreement to be acquired by Blackstone — a private equity, investment banking and asset management corporation — for $6.1 billion, including debt and other factors.
2. St. John's Medical Center partners with Huntsman Cancer Institute
Jackson, Wyo.-based St. John's Medical Center trustees agreed to partner with Salt Lake City-based research facility Huntsman Cancer Institute.
3. CHI Franciscan, Virginia Mason sign LOI to affiliate
CHI Franciscan Health and Virginia Mason Health System signed a letter of intent to strike a clinical partnership and further align their combined 1,600 physicians throughout the Puget Sound.
4. Rochester Regional Health acquires Eastside Medical Urgent Care
Rochester (N.Y.) Regional Health acquired Penfield, N.Y.-based Eastside Medical Urgent Care.
5. CHS-owned hospital partners with Nemours Children's to expand pediatric services
Pottstown (Pa.) Memorial Medical Center and Wilmington, Del.-based Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children partnered to provide advanced pediatric care for families in the Pottstown area.
6. Door County Medical Center, Hospital Sisters Health System embark on affiliation
Sturgeon Bay, Wis.-based Door County Medical Center affiliated with Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System to deliver high quality healthcare to residents in northeast Wisconsin.
7. Banner Health completes acquisition of 32 urgent care centers in Arizona
Phoenix-based Banner Health completed its purchase of 32 urgent care facilities in Arizona from retail chain Urgent Care Extra.
8. LHC Group, LifePoint Health to partner for home health and hospice
LHC Group and Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health formed a joint venture aimed at strengthening home health and hospice services.
9. MD Anderson seeks affiliation with UT San Antonio cancer center
Houston-based MD Anderson Cancer Center affiliated with the University of Texas at San Antonio's Cancer Therapy & Research Center to expand cancer treatment services throughout the state.
10. Laughlin Memorial Hospital, MSHA sign letter of intent to merge
Greeneville, Tenn.-based Laughlin Memorial Hospital and Johnson City, Tenn.-based Mountain States Health Alliance signed a letter of intent to merge.
11. RWJBarnabas Health, Rutgers partner on sports medicine program
West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health and New Brunswick, N.J. based Rutgers University signed a partnership to create a comprehensive sports medicine program to serve Rutgers students, staff and the community.
12. Prime Healthcare acquires Ohio hospital
Prime Healthcare Foundation, the nonprofit affiliate of Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services, acquired 56-bed Coshocton (Ohio) County Memorial Hospital.
13. CHS to sell 17 hospitals to drive down debt
CEO of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems Wayne Smith explained the health system's decision to sell hospitals and other assets to help trim its debt load in a third-quarter earnings call.
14. NYU Langone partners with National Women's Hockey League
New York University Langone, based in New York City, became the official hospital for the National Women's Hockey League for the 2016-17 season.
15. Wellmont to officially own Takoma Regional Hospital
Kingsport, Tenn.-based Wellmont Health System moved forward with plans to become the sole owner of Greeneville, Tenn.-based Takoma Regional Hospital.
16. Shuttered California hospital strikes deal to reopen
Hospital officials signed a deal to reopen the formerly shuttered Colusa (Calif.) Regional Medical Center. The medical center closed its doors in April.
17. Massachusetts General Hospital acquisition of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital nearing close
Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital officials said they are close to finalizing the acquisition agreement with Dover, N.H.-based Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
18. 3 New Hampshire hospitals plan to complete affiliation January 2017
Manchester-based Catholic Medical Center, Wolfeboro-based Huggins Hospital and Peterborough-based Monadnock Community Hospital — all in New Hampshire — moved forward with a proposed affiliation agreement.
19. Virginia state authorities approve Wellmont, MSHA merger
The Southwest Virginia Health Authority approved the proposed merger between Kingsport, Tenn.-based Wellmont Health System and Johnson City, Tenn.-based Mountain States Health Alliance.
20. Baptist Health South Florida to affiliate with local hospital
Marathon, Fla.-based Fishermen's Community Hospital and Miami-based Baptist Health South Florida agreed to form an affiliation in 2017.
21. South Haven Community Health System to join Bronson Healthcare Group
South Haven (Mich.) Community Health System will become a part of Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Bronson Healthcare Group as early as Jan. 1.
22. LifeBridge Health acquires 2 outpatient surgery centers
Baltimore-based LifeBridge Health acquired the majority interest in two medical facilities — Owings Mills, Md.-based SurgiCenter of Baltimore and Ellicott City (Md.) Ambulatory Surgery Center.
23. Hackensack Meridian to acquire JFK Medical Center
After much speculation regarding Edison, N.J.-based JFK Medical Center's decision to partner with another facility, hospital officials signed a letter of intent with Hackensack (N.J.) Meridian Health to discuss a potential affiliation.
24. CHI St. Luke's to add ER in East Texas
CHI St. Luke's Health-Memorial signed a non-binding letter of intent to take over ownership of Altus Emergency Center in Lufkin, Texas.
25. Ochsner Health System to partner with Mississippi health system
New Orleans-based Ochsner Health System and McComb, Miss.-based Southwest Health System declared their intent to form a strategic partnership to provide specialized, innovative care to residents in the region.
26. Kindred inks $700M deal to buy 36 SNFs from Ventas
As part of Kindred Healthcare's plan to exit the skilled nursing facility business, the Louisville, Ky.-based company inked agreements to purchase the 36 SNFs it currently leases from Ventas, a Chicago-based real estate investment trust.
27. Grinnell Regional Medical Center eyes partnership with UnityPoint Health, UI Healthcare
Grinnell (Iowa) Regional Medical Center signed a letter of intent to partner with UnityPoint Health – Des Moines (Iowa) and University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City.
28. Good Shepherd Health System to merge with Christus Health
Longview, Texas-based Good Shepherd Health System will merge with Irving, Texas-based Christus Health, effective early next year.
29. Madera Community Hospital launches partnership with VEP Healthcare
Concord, Calif.-based VEP Healthcare launched a partnership with Madera (Calif.) Community Hospital. VEP Healthcare will provide emergency medicine and medical services to the hospital.
30. University of Kansas Hospital enters joint venture with Stormont cancer center
Kansas City-based University of Kansas Hospital and Topeka, Kan.-based Stormont Vail Health's Cotton O'Neil Cancer Center agreed to embark on a joint venture to expand radiation oncology services in the area.
31. IU Health to operate Frankfort Hospital
Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health and Clinton County agreed to a five-year contract naming IU Health the new operator of Frankfort (Ind.) Hospital, effective June 1.
32. Arkansas Children's Hospital forms nursery alliance with Conway Regional
Little Rock-based Arkansas Children's Hospital and Conway (Ark.) Regional Health System embarked on an affiliation agreement to create a pediatric nursery alliance.
33. Louisiana, Ochsner Health System partner for free medical assistant training
New Orleans-based Ochsner Health System and the Louisiana Workforce Commission are accepting applications for their free medical assistant training program in spring 2017.
34. Beth Israel, Lahey back in merger talks for the 4th time
Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Health are in talks to discuss a possible merger. This is the fourth time the institutions have attempted to combine operations in the past five years.
35. Sale of Doctors Hospital in the works, may reopen as clinic
Columbus, Ohio, resident John Johnson, MD, is in the process of buying the former Massillon, Ohio-based Doctors Hospital for $465,000.
36. Baptist Health to partner with Walgreens on pharmacy, clinic operations
Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens will transition ownership of three retail health clinics in northeast Florida to Jacksonville, Fla.-based Baptist Health beginning in May 2017.
37. Children's Hospital Los Angeles to expand partnership with Providence
After embarking on a successful partnership with Providence Tarzana (Calif.) Medical Center in 2015, Children's Hospital Los Angeles expanded its partnership with Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health & Services.
38. CHS sells 2 hospitals for $425M as part of debt-reduction effort
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems signed a definitive agreement to sell Spokane, Wash.-based Rockwood Health System to Tacoma, Wash.-based MultiCare for $425 million.
39. WellSpan Health to work with University of Maryland to expand cancer treatment options
York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health teamed up with the University of Maryland in College Park to treat cancer patients using proton therapy technology available at the university.
40. Sheltering Arms Hospital, VCU Health collaborate to build rehabilitation hospital
Mechanicsville, Va.-based Sheltering Arms Hospital and Richmond-based Virginia Commonwealth University Health System partnered on a 114-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility.
41. Children's Hospital of Georgia, Subway raise $3k for NICU
Physicians from the Augusta-based Children's Hospital of Georgia exchanged scrubs for subs to raise money for the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit.
42. Kansas issues proposals for partner to operate state hospital
Kansas state officials are searching for a private partner to help operate Osawatomie (Kan.) State Hospital.
43. Penn State Hershey Medical Center searches for partners after failed Pinnacle merger
After a federal judge ruled against the merger of Harrisburg, Pa.-based PinnacleHealth System and Penn State Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center, Penn State Health's CEO said the medical center is open to pursuing new collaborations and partnerships.
44. Reading Health System, UPMC Health Plan reveal insurance venture
Reading (Pa.) Health System and UPMC Health Plan finalized an agreement to form a provider-payer joint venture beginning Jan 1.
45. Kingwood Medical Center partners with obstetric hospitalist group
Kingwood (Texas) Medical Center partnered with Mauldin, S.C.-based Ob Hospitalist Group, a national physician group specializing in the development, staffing and management of hospital-based OB-GYN practices.
46. Cole Memorial Hospital, U of Rochester cancer centers to partner
The Patterson Cancer Center at Coudersport, Pa.-based Cole Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center's Wilmot Cancer Institute divulged plans to collaborate on an initiative to enhance cancer care for communities in northern Pennsylvania.
47. Freeman Health System to affiliate with Girard Medical Center
Joplin, Mo.-based Freeman Health System declared its intent to affiliate with Girard (Kan.) Medical Center to provide quality care to the communities served by both organizations.
48. Longtime rivals Carolinas, Novant in talks to collaborate care for distressed neighborhoods
The CEOs of Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System and Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health launched a partnership to improve access to healthcare for distressed communities in Charlotte.
