Sale of Doctors Hospital in the works, may reopen as clinic

Columbus, Ohio, resident John Johnson, MD, is in the process of buying the former Massillon, Ohio-based Doctors Hospital for $465,000. Dr. Johnson plans to reopen the facility in late 2017 as an outpatient and drug treatment clinic, according to IndeOnline.

A board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Johnson said he will invest $20 million to $25 million over a three- to five-year period to upgrade the facility. The project is expected to create up to 300 new healthcare jobs, according to the article.

The city of Canton, Ohio, agreed to form a joint economic development district with PerryTownship trustees to help facilitate the transaction. According to the agreement, revenue from Canton's 2 percent income tax generated by hospital employees would pay will be split evenly between the city of Canton and the township.

The hospital originally opened in 1963 and served the community for more than 40 years. The hospital merged with another local facility in 2005, but was subsequently closed in 2008. In 2010, Cambridge and MacMillan Properties bought the empty facility from Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems for $1, according to the article.
