A look at Amazon’s healthcare playbook

Amazon has spent years trying to break into healthcare, and while some bets have fizzled, the company’s footprint in the industry is still expanding.

Amazon has pursued that goal through a mix of acquisitions, launches and experiments, not all of them successful.

The company bought One Medical in 2023 to deepen its push into primary care and expanded Amazon Pharmacy as a consumer-facing prescription business, while AWS has become a major technology vendor for health systems and life sciences companies. But Amazon has also pulled back from several healthcare bets, including shuttering Amazon Care and winding down its Halo health tracker, underscoring how difficult it can be even for a tech giant to gain traction in healthcare.

Here is a look at Amazon’s most recent healthcare moves as reported by Becker’s since January:

  • On Oct. 15, Epic announced it is working with Amazon Pharmacy, Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs and other pharmacy companies to develop Prescription Marketplace, a tool that will allow clinicians and patients to compare cash and insurance prices for medications directly within Epic’s EHR. The feature is expected to launch in summer 2027.

  • On Sept. 15, Amazon One Medical expanded its weight management services to 48 states and Washington, D.C., offering cash-pay virtual consultations for GLP-1 treatment starting at $39 for messaging visits and $59 for video visits.

  • On Aug. 19, Becker’s reported that a cybersecurity incident involving Amazon One Medical’s senior health unit affected 153,174 patients. The incident involved unauthorized access to a third-party file storage system containing archived records from Iora Health, which One Medical acquired in 2021.

  • On Aug. 1, Amazon One Medical’s partnership with Coral Gables, Fla.-based Baptist Health South Florida took effect, connecting One Medical’s primary care patients with the health system’s specialty care network across South Florida.

  • On May 27, Amazon announced that Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, would step down after more than 15 years at the company. Roy Schoenberg, MD, co-founder of telehealth company Amwell, was named his successor, effective July 1.

  • On May 7, Amazon Pharmacy expanded access to the oral version of Ozempic through same-day prescription delivery and plans for in-office pharmacy kiosk pickup at select One Medical locations.

  • On April 21, Amazon launched a new weight management program through Amazon One Medical that integrates primary care, pharmacy services and virtual care to support patients using GLP-1 medications.

  • On March 5, Amazon Web Services launched Amazon Connect Health, an artificial intelligence tool designed to automate administrative tasks for health systems and improve patient access to care.

  • Amazon Health Services named Keith Shah, PhD, its new chief network officer.

  • On February 10, Amazon One Medical rolled out Health Insights, a new beta feature designed to help eligible members better understand routine blood test results through personalized analysis and recommendations.

  • York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health will be migrating its entire technology infrastructure to the cloud through a partnership with Amazon Web Services.

  • Amazon One Medical rolled out an AI chatbot that automatically connects to patient health records. Health AI can help answer health questions, schedule appointments and manage medications, and can triage patients to a virtual or in-person visit if needed.

  • In January, Amazon’s One Medical and Cleveland Clinic opened their second collaborative primary care office. The office follows the October opening of the organizations’ first joint primary care site in Northeast Ohio.

  • On Jan. 1, Chicago-based Rush University System for Health announced a partnership with Amazon One Medical to expand access to primary and specialty care.
