8 hospital projects worth $1B+ in 2026

So far in 2026, Becker’s has reported on eight health systems that announced, advanced or finalized hospital projects worth $1 billion or more.

Five of the projects involve new hospitals or patient towers located in the South, including Texas, Georgia, Florida and the Carolinas.

1. Kansas City, Mo.-based Children’s Mercy announced plans for a more than $1 billion acute care patient tower at its Adele Hall campus in April. It is expected to increase total capacity by 25% to 30% and will include a new location for the pediatric intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit and expanded emergency department. Enabling work is slated to start in fall 2026, with a goal of completion in 2031.

2. Fort Worth, Texas-based JPS Health Network broke ground on a $1.5 billion hospital in April. The project, which is part of a larger, $2.5 billion master facility plan, includes the new hospital and expansion of the existing pavilion. The investments will expand capacity and bring advanced clinical services into integrated spaces, the system said. Construction on both aspects is slated to be completed in 2030.

3. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in April began construction on a new cancer hospital in Boston, which is estimated to cost $1.68 billion. The 300-bed hospital was announced in September 2023, approved by the Boston Planning Department in October 2024 and is expected to open in 2031. The hospital will include 10 inpatient floors.

4. The Fulton County (Ga.) Commissioners voted unanimously March 18 to advance plans for a $900 million hospital, which would operate under Atlanta-based Grady Health System. The total campus investment is expected to be more than $1 billion, including a $38 million freestanding emergency department and a $75 million medical office building. The hospital will be a 200-bed facility.

5. Columbus-based The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center opened its $1.9 billion University Hospital in February. The 26-story hospital includes 820 private rooms, 24 operating rooms and 234 ICU beds. It will be staffed by 12,000 providers and support staff, the hospital said.

6. The board of trustees for the Medical University of South Carolina advanced plans in February to build a new cancer hospital in Charleston, which is estimated to cost $1.115 billion. The construction and equipment and furnishings are expected to cost $885 million and $230 million, respectively. The project’s outpatient facility is slated to open in 2028 and the cancer hospital is expected to be completed by 2030.

7. The board of trustees for Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health approved construction plans in February that are expected to cost more than $1 billion. The project includes a heart and vascular patient tower, a heart and vascular medical office building and a physical rehabilitation hospital. The new patient tower will consolidate inpatient and surgical heart and vascular care in one facility, which is slated to open in 2031.

8. Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Health Care System is investing $1 billion in capital projects, including construction that is underway for a $507 million hospital in North Port, Fla. The 100-bed hospital is expected to open in 2028. It is also completing expansion projects including an $82.5 million inpatient rehabilitation facility at its SMH-Venice (Fla.) Campus.
