Grand Rapids and Southfield, Mich.-based Corewell Health plans to invest $1.7 billion in major expansions at two Michigan hospitals.
The investment will expand capacity and modernize emergency and surgical care at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital.
“This is a once-in-a-generation investment in Michigan’s healthcare future and it reflects our commitment to making healthcare more personal, delivering extraordinary care and making it easier for people to access the services they need,” Corewell Health President and CEO Tina Freese Decker said in an Aug. 27 news release. “As our communities grow and patient needs become more complex, we are building the capacity, technology and care environments needed today for our patients and team members for many years to come.”
Six things to know:
1. Corewell Health plans to invest $1.34 billion in a new 780,000-square-foot facility on the Butterworth Hospital campus. The 11-story facility will include a new emergency department, 180 private patient rooms, 17 operating rooms and a hyperbaric chamber.
2. Butterworth Hospital’s average patient census has consistently exceeded 90% occupancy over the past year. The health system said the expansion will help the hospital meet growing demand while continuing to operate as West Michigan’s only level 1 trauma center.
3. Corewell Health will invest about $440 million in a new 423,000-square-foot, eight-story hospital tower at its Troy campus, which is also consistently above 90% capacity. The tower will include 180 private rooms, a new emergency department waiting room and improved campus connectivity.
4. The Troy hospital’s emergency department sees more than 106,000 visits annually. The new tower will provide direct access from the parking deck to the emergency department. Corewell Health is also planning an ambulatory center in Oxford, a cardiac ambulatory surgery center in Sterling Heights and other clinical expansions in southeast Michigan.
5. Demolition and construction for the Butterworth project and construction of the Troy tower are expected to begin in summer 2027. Both projects will undergo regulatory and municipal reviews, with completion expected in 2030.
6. Corewell is a nonprofit integrated health system that comprises 21 hospitals, more than 300 outpatient locations and over 60,000 employees, including more than 11,500 physicians and advanced practice providers, according to its website.
