Boston-based Dana-Farber Cancer Institute broke ground Oct. 19 on the Lavine Bekenstein Cancer Hospital, a 300-bed inpatient facility developed in collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Five things to know:
1. The 450,000-square-foot hospital will span 10 floors and be dedicated exclusively to inpatient cancer care, according to an Oct. 19 Dana-Farber news release.
2. The hospital will be built on the former Joslin Diabetes Center site in Boston. It will serve as part of an interconnected campus linking Dana-Farber, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians.
3. Site preparation began in April with the deconstruction of the former diabetes center. The hospital, estimated to cost $1.68 billion, was first announced in September 2023. It is slated to open in 2031.
4. The project is intended to strengthen coordination between inpatient and outpatient cancer services while integrating clinical care, research and technology. The facility will also include flexible clinical space designed to accommodate advances in cancer treatment.
5. The hospital was made possible by a joint philanthropic commitment from Josh and Anita Bekenstein and the Jonathan and Jeannie Lavine family. Dana-Farber said the contribution represents the largest single gift in its history.
