37 oncologists on the move in 2024

Here are 37 oncologists and oncology leaders stepping into new roles in 2024:

  1. Andrew Place, MD, PhD, was named vice president and pediatric chief medical officer of the Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center in Boston.

  2. New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health appointed A. Samer Al-Homsi system chief of blood and marrow transplant and cellular therapy at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute and director of faculty and academic affairs in medical oncology.

  3. Oncologists Manojna Konda, MD, and Vivek Yadala, MD, joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.

  4. New Brunswick-based Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health appointed Nirag Jhala, MD, as chief of the division of oncologic pathology.

  5. Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute appointed two medical directors and welcomed seven oncology professionals.
    • Thach-Giao Truong, MD, joined the hematology and medical oncology team as medical director of the melanoma program.
    • Blessing Nollah, MD, joined the hematology oncology department as the medical director at Cleveland Clinic Mansfield Cancer Center.
    • Paul Donegan, DO, joined the department of palliative and supportive care.
    • Michael Menefee, MD, is now a medical oncologist in the department of hematology and medical oncology in the lung cancer program.
    • Mary Misischia, DO, is now a medical oncologist in the department of hematology and medical oncology.
    • Eileen Slavin, DO, joined the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation with special training in oncology rehabilitation.
    • Eashwar Swamy, MD, joined the department of palliative and supportive care.
    • Shirley Thomas, MD, joined the department of palliative and supportive care.
    • Shiyao Wang, MD, is now a psychiatrist in the psycho-oncology program within the department of palliative and supportive care.

  6. Anthony Villano, MD, assistant professor in the department of surgical oncology at Philadelphia-based Fox Chase Cancer Center, and Joceline Vu, MD, assistant professor of surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Philadelphia-based Temple University, were elected members of the Education Committee of the Association for Academic Surgery.

  7. Alan Yahanda, MD, a surgical oncologist, was named president of the Parkview Packnett Family Cancer Institute in Fort Wayne, Ind.

  8. Philadelphia-based Fox Chase Cancer Center welcomed Joyce Habib, MD, as an assistant professor in the breast medical oncology program in the department of hematology/oncology.
  9. Francisco Esteva, MD, PhD, was appointed chief at New York City-based Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, and the Manhattan cancer program at Northwell Health Cancer Institute. He also was named director of breast cancer translational research at the cancer institute.
  10. Miami-based Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center named Damian Green, MD, chief of its division of transplantation and cellular therapy.

  11. Philadelphia-based Fox Chase Cancer Center welcomed Lilian Shin-Cho, PhD, as assistant professor in the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program. The center also welcomed Yash Chhabra PhD, as assistant professor in the Cancer Signaling and Microenvironment Research Program.

  12. Flint-based Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Central Michigan welcomed medical oncologist Elias Zeine, MD, to its team of physicians.

  13. Memphis, Tenn.-based St. Jude Children's Research Hospital named Sara Federico, MD, director of the solid tumor division within its department of oncology.

  14. New Brunswick-based Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and RWJBarnabas Health appointed George Raptis, MD, director of oncology services for the northern region at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center.

  15. Murray-Calloway (Ky.) County's Regional Cancer Center welcomed hematologist/oncologist Mark Vellek, MD, to its medical team.

  16. Dustin Walters, MD, joined Farmington-based UConn School of Medicine as section chief for thoracic surgery in the department of surgery.

  17. Diane Simeone, MD, was named director of Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.

  18. Natchez, Miss.-based Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center welcomed radiation oncologist Gregory Cotter, MD, back to the practice.

  19. Los Angeles-based UCLA Health appointed Mediget Teshome, MD, chief of breast surgery and director of breast health.

  20. Uvalde (Texas) Memorial Hospital's Kate Marmion Regional Cancer Medical Center welcomed medical oncologist and hematologist Matthew Peterson, MD, to the team.

  21. New Haven, Conn.-based Smilow Cancer Hospital welcomed Katyayani Papatla, MD,  to the gynecologic oncology program.

  22. Fort Myers-based Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute appointed Joel Grossman, MD, and Maen Hussein, MD, to its executive board.

  23. Diane Simeone, MD, was appointed director of Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, effective April 1. 

  24. UChicago Medicine appointed Kimyatta Washington vice president and chief administrative officer of cancer services for the health system, effective Feb. 1.

  25. Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Hollings Cancer Center named William Hawkins, MD, its inaugural deputy director.

  26. Fort Myers-based Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute welcomed gynecologic oncologist Bradley Monk, MD, to its team.

  27. Taofeek Owonikoko, MD, PhD, was appointed executive director of University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, both based in Baltimore.
