Hospitals and unions: 12 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported on the following events related to hospital-union relationships — including pickets, contracts and elections — since Nov. 6.

1. Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, SEIU agree to contract extension
A contract agreement between union employees and Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge (Tenn.) was extended, according to The Oak Ridger.

2. Memorial Hospital employees picket amid closure plans
Union-represented healthcare workers at Pawtucket, R.I.-based Memorial Hospital picketed outside the facility over Providence, R.I.-based Care New England's plans to close the facility.

3. Tufts nurses may strike on Christmas
Nurses at Boston-based Tufts Medical Center may be planning a strike Dec. 25, according to Boston Business Journal.

4. Maine Coast Memorial Hospital workers seek unionization
Employees at Ellsworth-based Maine Coast Memorial Hospital are asking for a union election, according to The Ellsworth American.

5. Harrison Medical Center workers picket over staffing
Workers represented by UFCW 21 advocated for safe staffing during a picket outside of Harrison Medical Center-Silverdale (Wash.), according to the Kitsap Sun.

6. Barton Health nurses vote to unionize
Nurses at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.-based Barton Health, voted to join the California Nurses Association, according to a Tahoe Daily Tribune report.

7. Brigham and Women's Hospital nurses picket over patient care
Nurses at Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital picketed to draw attention to what they deem are patient care problems.

8. Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill workers seek to overturn alleged forced SEIU representation
Employees at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill E. Norwegian Street in Pottsville, Pa., are asking the National Labor Relations Board to overturn a ruling they claim forced them into union representation.

9. Samaritan Summit Village, Samaritan Keep Home workers unionize
Workers at Samaritan Summit Village and Samaritan Keep Home facilities in Watertown, N.Y., voted to join 1199 Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers East, according to the Watertown Daily Times.

10. HRHCare workers in New York unionize
Workers at Hudson River HealthCare in Long Island, N.Y., voted to join 1199 Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers East.

11. Connecticut hospitals, union reach labor deal
Workers at Danbury (Conn.) Hospital and New Milford (Conn.) Hospital reached a tentative contract agreement with management, according to The News-Times.

12. Legacy Health reaches contract agreement with workers, averts strike
Workers at Portland, Ore.-based Legacy Health ratified a contract agreement with management.
