9 Recent Hospital and Health System Layoffs

The following nine hospital and health system layoffs and workforce reductions were covered by Becker's Hospital Review in the last two weeks. They are listed below by the number of employees and/or positions affected.

 

1. St. Vincent Health Cuts About 865 Jobs
St. Vincent Health in Indianapolis eliminated about 865 jobs throughout its 22-hospital system. The layoffs cut St. Vincent Health's labor budget by 5 percent. The system initially announced the workforce reduction in May.

2. The Hospital of Central Connecticut Eliminates 100 Positions
The Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain eliminated 100 full-time equivalent positions due to budget constraints. The hospital also had to mandate furloughs, according to the report.

3. Waterbury Hospital in Connecticut Cuts 83 Jobs
Waterbury (Conn.) Hospital cut 83 positions, leading to some layoffs. The workforce reduction extended to every level of the hospital, including clinical workers.

4. Sierra View District Hospital Lays Off 49
Sierra View District Hospital in Portersville, Calif., laid off 49 employees. The affected employees were offered a severance package and placed on a call-back list.

5. Ozarks Medical Center Lays Off 32
Ozarks Medical Center, a 114-bed nonprofit hospital in West Plains, Mo., laid off 32 employees and eliminated 12 other positions. Additionally, members of the hospital's management team are taking a 5 percent cut in pay, and some employees' hours will be cut.

6. Grinnell Regional Medical Center Eliminates 41 Positions
Grinnell (Iowa) Regional Medical Center eliminated 41 positions, resulting in 23 layoffs. In addition to the workforce reduction, GRMC offered 11 additional employees alternative roles at the hospital.

7. Duke Raleigh Hospital Lays Off 27 Employees
Duke Raleigh (N.C.) Hospital is laying off 27 employees, including 24 full-time workers. The hospital gave affected employees a 60-day notice June 30.

8. Eastern Maine Medical Center Outsources Laundry Services, Cuts 16 Jobs
Bangor-based Eastern Maine Medical Center is transferring its laundry duties to an outside company, resulting in 16 layoffs. Eleven people will continue to work in EMMC's laundry department. EMMC officials are attempting to find other jobs for the 16 affected workers.

9. Doctors' Hospital of Michigan Braces for Layoffs
Doctors' Hospital of Michigan in Pontiac is experiencing financial troubles and will be instituting layoffs because of those problems. The hospital did not yet know how many employees will be affected by the layoffs.
