Grand Forks, N.D.-based Altru Health System will assume ownership of CHI St. Alexius Health Devils Lake (N.D.) — a 25-bed critical access hospital — from Chicago-based CommonSpirit, with the transition set to take place March 1, 2026.

Four things to know:

1. The move aims to strengthen long-term access to care in the Lake Region by uniting hospital and clinic services under a single health system, according to a joint announcement Dec. 17.

2. Devils Lake Hospital has been recognized as one of the most financially stable rural hospitals in the nation and North Dakota’s top hospital for community health investment in 2021.

3. Tanner White will continue serving as CEO of the hospital, with Derek Goebel continuing to serve as CFO.

4. Altru Health System currently operates one acute-care hospital and one rehabilitation hospital and serves about 230,000 residents in northeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, according to its website. In 2011, it became the first affiliate member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

“This transition reflects a thoughtful, community-focused approach to ensuring long-term access to care while supporting the teams who serve patients every day,” Tim Bricker, president of CommonSpirit’s central region, said. “The Devils Lake community has been incredibly patient throughout this process, and we are pleased to reach this final stage.”
