Bon Secours Mercy Health completed its acquisition of a Virginia hospital, growing into a 48-hospital system, and Novant Health acquired its second rural North Carolina hospital in five months. Here are five hospital M&A moves completed during the first two days of November:

1. Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health completed its acquisition of Northern Regional Hospital, a 133-bed hospital in Mount Airy, N.C.

Novant said it is developing plans to expand services at the hospital and throughout Surry County. The system had already supported Northern Regional’s clinical operations before the deal, including through a professional services agreement for heart and vascular care and teleneurology services for acute stroke patients.

The deal marks the system’s second rural hospital acquisition in northwest North Carolina in five months.

2. Corvallis, Ore.-based Samaritan Health Services joined Tacoma, Wash.-based MultiCare Health System, completing an affiliation announced in 2025.

As part of the agreement, MultiCare has committed to investing $700 million over 10 years to expand access to care, recruit and retain clinicians, support workforce development and improve facilities and technology across Samaritan’s region. A regional strategic planning process led by local leaders and shaped by community input will set longer-term service priorities and investments.

Samaritan will keep its local leadership and community-based governance, and its name will now be paired with MultiCare’s. With the affiliation, MultiCare grew into an 18-hospital system with locations in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

3. Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health acquired Fauquier Health in Warrenton, Va., from Brentwood, Tenn.-based Lifepoint Health.

The acquisition establishes Bon Secours’ first hospital presence in Northern Virginia and expands its statewide hospital footprint to 12. Fauquier Health is expected to maintain its existing services and operations without interruption to patient care. Employees are expected to remain in their current roles, and Rebecca Segal will continue serving as the hospital’s president.

The 97-bed hospital is Bon Secours Mercy Health’s 48th overall.

4. Madison, Wis.-based UW Health completed its acquisition of Marshfield Medical Center-Beaver Dam (Wis.) from Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System, part of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health.

The campus is now UW Health Beaver Dam Hospital and Clinics. About 350 employees joined UW Health as part of the transition.

The integrated campus includes a hospital, a skilled nursing facility and independent senior living apartments. It also operates two assisted living facilities and primary care clinics in Columbus, Horicon and Waupun, Wis.

5. Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health completed its takeover of Mercy Medical Center in Springfield from Hartford, Conn.-based Trinity Health of New England.

The 182-bed hospital, now named Baystate Mercy Hospital, had been part of Trinity Health of New England, a member of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, since 2015. The systems signed a definitive agreement April 28 after Mercy explored partnerships to address financial pressures, including inadequate reimbursement, declining payment rates, a shift toward outpatient care and persistent staffing shortages.

Baystate integrated the hospital, its joint venture affiliates and 45 medical group entities, and switched to a new Oracle Health EHR the same day.
