Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a financially challenged hospital in the city from Hartford, Conn.-based Trinity Health of New England.
Pending regulatory approval, Baystate will acquire Mercy Medical Center, a 182-bed hospital, as well as Mercy’s joint ventures and affiliated medical groups, according to an April 28 Baystate news release. Mercy has been part of Trinity since 2015.
Mercy has faced significant financial pressures that threaten its long-term viability, according to the release. Despite efforts to improve its position, sustainability remained at risk due to inadequate reimbursement, declining payment rates, a shift toward outpatient care and ongoing staffing shortages.
“Our decision to transition Mercy to Baystate Health reflects our shared aim to [ensure] that patients continue to have access to high-quality care,” Trinity Health of New England President and CEO Montez Carter, PharmD, said in the release. “We are confident that Baystate Health will honor Mercy’s legacy and strengthen its ability to meet the evolving needs of the community.”
Trinity Health of New England is part of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the U.S.
