Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health has completed its acquisition of Northern Regional Hospital, a 133-bed hospital in Mount Airy, N.C.

The deal marks the system’s second rural hospital acquisition in northwest North Carolina in five months.

The Surry County (N.C.) Board of Commissioners approved Novant’s acquisition proposal in June, about eight months after the system submitted it. The hospital and its about 1,000 employees officially joined Novant Nov. 2. The facility is now named Novant Health Northern Regional Medical Center.

Northern Regional provides advanced imaging, laboratory, cardiology, maternity, orthopedic, surgical, skilled nursing and emergency services, according to a Nov. 2 news release. Novant said it is developing plans to expand services at the hospital and throughout Surry County. The system had already supported Northern Regional’s clinical operations before the deal, including through a professional services agreement for heart and vascular care and tele-neurology services for acute stroke patients.

The acquisition comes five months after Novant completed its acquisition of Community Hospital of Stokes, a 53-bed critical access hospital in Danbury, N.C. Novant now operates 23 hospitals and more than 900 locations across North Carolina and South Carolina.
