Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health’s proposed acquisition of Mount Airy-based Northern Regional Hospital has been approved by the Surry County (N.C.) Board of Commissioners.

Under the agreement, Novant will acquire the 133-bed facility and its related facilities in Mount Airy, Novant Health Triad Region President Alisha Hutchens said in a June 17 statement shared with Becker’s.

The deal is subject to regulatory approval, including approval from the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office.

“With this agreement in place, we are now moving through the customary integration process and look forward to officially welcoming the hospital’s patients and dedicated team members into the Novant Health network later this year,” Ms. Hutchens said.

Novant submitted its acquisition proposal to the county commissioners in October. Novant said it is “uniquely positioned” to partner with Northern Regional Hospital. The system currently operates five hospitals in the region and also has a significant clinic and outpatient network in the area, which Novant uses to extend healthcare services to patients in rural communities.

The system said in the proposal it is already a committed partner to Northern Regional Hospital and supports the organization’s clinical care operations, including a professional services agreement for heart and vascular care, as well as tele-neurology services for acute stroke patients.

“Novant Health’s vision for the acquisition of Northern Regional Hospital and its assets reflects a long-term commitment to keeping care local in Surry County,” the proposal said. “Novant Health is committed to maintaining current services and partnering with the community to offer new services where needed.”
