Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health completed its takeover of Mercy Medical Center from Hartford, Conn.-based Trinity Health of New England Nov. 1.

Baystate integrated the hospital, its joint venture affiliates and 45 medical group entities, and switched to a new Oracle Health EHR the same day, according to a Nov. 1 news release.

The 182-bed hospital, now named Baystate Mercy Hospital, had been part of Trinity Health of New England, a member of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, since 2015. The systems signed a definitive agreement April 28 after Mercy explored partnerships to address financial pressures, including inadequate reimbursement, declining payment rates, a shift toward outpatient care and persistent staffing shortages.

Baystate spent seven months preparing for the transition, which included launching MyBaystate Health, a new patient portal, according to the release.

Baystate’s board-certified emergency medicine faculty now staff Baystate Mercy’s 24/7 emergency department, and the Sister Caritas Cancer Center has joined Baystate’s cancer program.

“Springfield must have two thriving, growing, successful hospitals,” Baystate President and CEO Peter Banko said in the release.

Mr. Banko said physicians and clinicians will lead work on how the two hospitals, located six blocks apart, can collaborate to expand access and improve quality once operations stabilize over the next few weeks.
