The following healthcare mergers, acquisitions, partnerships and general transactions took place or were announced during the past month.
1. Children's Hospital & Medical Center Nebraska to purchase 7-acre lot from Methodist Health
Omaha, Neb.-based Children's Hospital & Medical Center signed an agreement to purchase a portion of a 12-acre lot from Dallas-based Methodist Health System for just under $10 million.
2. McLaren Health to buy Indiana health plan
Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care signed a definitive agreement to acquire nonprofit health maintenance organization MDwise.
3. Owens & Minor to acquire surgical and prevention medicine business for $710M
Owens & Minor, a medical device distributor, entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the surgical and infection prevention business from Halyard Health, a medical technology and device manufacturer, for $710 million.
4. CHS sells Mississippi hospital to Curae Health
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems sold Merit Health Northwest Mississippi, a 181-bed hospital in Clarksdale, to Clinton, Tenn.-based Curae Health.
5. KU Health, Ardent close St. Francis Health purchase
Kansas City-based University of Kansas Health System and Nashville, Tenn.-based Ardent Health Services closed on their joint acquisition of St. Francis Health, a 378-bed hospital in Topeka, Kan., Nov. 1.
6. Quorum sells 72-bed Alabama hospital
Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health divested 72-bed L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital in Greenville, Ala., to the Health Care Authority of the City of Greenville-L.V. Stabler Hospital, a public corporation.
7. CHS divests Florida hospital to HCA
Community Health Systems completed the sale of Highlands Regional Medical Center, a 126-bed hospital in Sebring, Fla., to Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare.
8. Rice Memorial board OKs partnership with CentraCare, ACMC Health
The Willmar, Minn.-based Rice Memorial Hospital board of directors approved a series of agreements Oct. 30 to create a regional healthcare entity in partnership with Willmar-based ACMC Health and St. Cloud, Minn.-based CentraCare Health.
9. Elliot, Southern New Hampshire Health combine to create Solution Health
Manchester, N.H.-based Elliot Health System and Nashua-based Southern New Hampshire Health signed an agreement Oct. 30 to combine operations.
10. CHS to sell additional hospitals worth $2B in revenue
Community Health Systems completed its 30-hospital divestiture plan Nov. 1. Wayne Smith, chairman and CEO of CHS, said during a third quarter earnings call the company also expects to sell another group of its hospitals with combined revenue of $2 billion.
11. Summa Health, physician partners agree to end 3-year battle over Ohio hospital
Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health and Western Reserve Hospital Partners, which operates Western Reserve Hospital, signed a letter of intent to end their three-year battle over the Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio-based hospital, the organizations announced Nov. 8.
12. Mississippi hospital to remain county-owned after vote to sell fails
Residents of Oktibbeha voted Nov. 7 not to sell Starkville, Miss.-based OCH Regional Medical Center.
13. Wellmont, MSHA outline next steps following merger approval
After receiving final approval from the Virginia Department of Health Oct. 30, leaders from Kingsport, Tenn.-based Wellmont Health System and Johnson City, Tenn.-based Mountain States Health Alliance released several documents Nov. 7 outlining their plan to merge.
14. University Hospitals partners with Salem Regional Medical Center on cancer care
Salem (Ohio) Regional Medical Center partnered with Cleveland-based University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center to streamline cancer care for area patients, Salem Regional officials announced Nov. 8.
15. Berger Health System to begin negotiating official partnership with OhioHealth
Circleville, Ohio, voters approved a measure Nov. 8 to allow Circleville-based Berger Health System to enter into partnership negotiations with Columbus-based OhioHealth.
16. Franciscan Health purchases vacant hospital
Mishawaka, Ind.-based Franciscan Health purchased a vacant hospital in Hobart, Ind.
17. Geisinger to acquire New Jersey physician group
Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System will acquire Tinton Falls, N.J.-based Professional Orthopaedic Associates, effective Jan. 1, 2018.
18. Baptist Health signs letter of intent to acquire Hardin Memorial Health
Baptist Health, a nine-hospital system in Louisville, Ky., signed a letter of intent to acquire and operate Elizabethtown, Ky.-based Hardin Memorial Health Nov. 6.
19. United Medical Center to cut ties with hospital operator Veritas
The D.C. Council voted 7-6 Nov. 7 to sever its relationship with Veritas, which operates Washington, D.C.-based United Medical Center, and turned down a one-year, $4.2 million management contract extension with the consulting firm.
20. Sanford Health acquires stake in German health system
Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health's German subsidiary acquired a minority stake in Munich, Germany-based health system Isar-Klinik II AG, which owns the Isar Klinikum hospital in Munich, marking Sanford's first investment in an international hospital.
21. HCA bids $415M to purchase Indian River Medical Center
HCA Healthcare bid $415 million to purchase Vero Beach, Fla.-based Indian River Medical Center, the highest of eight bids to acquire the hospital
22. TLC Health Network plans merger with Brooks Memorial Hospital
Irving, N.Y.-based TLC Health Network confirmed plans to merge with Dunkirk, N.Y.-based Brooks Memorial Hospital and affiliate with Buffalo, N.Y.-based Kaleida Health.
23. Advisory Board finalizes $1.3B deal with UnitedHealth's Optum
Advisory Board shareholders approved a deal to sell the company's healthcare division to Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group's Optum arm for $1.3 billion.
24. Trinity Health to merge 2 of its Michigan health systems
Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health revealed plans to merge two of its Michigan health systems into a single 10-hospital organization.
25. OHSU, Adventist Health Portland finalize affiliation
Portland, Ore.-based OHSU and Adventist Health Portland finalized an agreement to integrate the organizations' clinical activities and services.
26. Judge approves UNC Health Care's bid to purchase bankrupt North Carolina hospital
A bankruptcy judge approved the $11.5 million sale of Eden, N.C.-based Morehead Memorial hospital to Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care.
27. Vanderbilt University Medical Center begins operating 14 Walgreens clinics
Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center began operating and providing clinical services at select retail health clinics within 14 Walgreens locations statewide.
28. DeKalb Medical, Emory Healthcare to form strategic partnership
Decatur, Ga.-based DeKalb Medical signed a letter of intent to form a strategic partnership with Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare.
29. LHC Group, Almost Family to merge into 781-facility home health behemoth
Lafayette, La.-based LHC Group agreed to enter into an all-stock merger-of-equals transaction with Louisville, Ky.-based Almost Family.
30. Highmark Health to integrate Pennsylvania hospital
Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health formed an affiliation agreement with Warren (Pa.) General Hospital, an 89-bed community hospital.
31. UPMC children's hospital, West Virginia facility partner on newborn care
The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and Morgantown, W.Va.-based Mon Health Medical Center formed a partnership to provide enhanced delivery and pediatric medicine services for families with newborns in West Virginia.
32. State OKs Hartford HealthCare deal to affiliate with Connecticut hospital
The Connecticut Department of Public Health Office of Health Care Access approved Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare's certificate of need application to affiliate with Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, a 109-bed facility in Torrington, Conn.
33. McLaren Health Care to integrate Huron Medical Center
The board of trustees of Bad Axe, Mich.-based Huron Medical Center said Nov. 29 the hospital will exclusively pursue a letter of intent to integrate with Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care.
34. BJC HealthCare petitions to become sole owner of 2 Illinois hospitals
St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare is seeking total ownership of two Illinois hospitals the health system acquired through a merger in 2016.
35. Virginia community's sole medical facility set to close in December
The community of Big Island, Va., is looking for ways to prevent their only medical facility from shuttering at the end of December.
36. Prospect, Brown University discuss joining forces to acquire Care New England
Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings and Providence, R.I.-based Brown University are reportedly in discussions to jointly purchase Care New England, also in Providence.
37. State OKs $12.2M sale of Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center
The New Jersey Department of Health State Health Planning Board approved the sale of Secaucus, N.J.-based Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center to a New York developer for $12.2 million.
38. UT Health San Antonio, MD Anderson partnership set to take effect in February
University of Texas Health San Antonio President William Henrich, MD, announced Nov. 28 the hospital's partnership with Houston-based MD Anderson Cancer Center will "go live" in February.
39. Rite Aid transfers 97 stores to Walgreens during first phase of asset sale
Camp Hill, Pa.-based Rite Aid completed the pilot closing and first phase of its asset sale to Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens Boots Alliance Nov. 27.
40. Texas Medical Center partners with J&J to spur medical device innovation
Houston-based Texas Medical Center partnered with Johnson & Johnson on a 25,500-square-foot facility at the hospital designed to spur innovation in the medical device field, J&J announced Nov. 8.
41. UAB Health System discusses potential agreement to prevent rural hospital closure
Birmingham, Ala.-based UAB Health System is discussing a potential management agreement to prevent a 60-year-old rural hospital — J. Paul Jones Hospital in Camden, Ala. — from closing.
42. Jay County Hospital to join IU Health in March
Portland, Ind.-based Jay County Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital, will join Indianapolis-based IU Health March 1 after signing a definitive agreement.
43. Palmetto Health, Greenville Health System finalize partnership
Columbia, S.C.-based Palmetto Health and Greenville (S.C.) Health System finalized their partnership Nov. 21 — creating a combined healthcare entity consisting of 13-hospitals.
