31 hospital transactions and partnerships in March

The following hospital mergers, acquisitions and general transactions took place or were announced in March, beginning with the most recent.

1. Proposed $15M deal could reopen bankrupt Arkansas hospital
West Memphis, Ark.-based Crittenden Regional Hospital could open its doors again through a deal with Nashville, Tenn.-based Ameris Health Systems.

2. Hospital Sisters Health System, Greenville Regional Hospital eye affiliation
Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System and Greenville (Ill.) Regional Hospital signed a letter of intent to begin the process of exploring an affiliation.

3. LifeBridge Health to acquire Carroll Hospital Center
LifeBridge Health finalized an agreement to acquire Westminster, Md.-based Carroll Hospital Center.

4. Natchez Regional Medical Center to consolidate city’s 2 hospitals
The Mississippi State Health Department granted Natchez (Miss.) Regional Medical Center permission to begin the renovations that will allow NRMC and Natchez Community Hospital to consolidate.

5. Peconic Bay Medical Center to join North Shore-LIJ Health System
Riverhead, N.Y.-based Peconic Bay Medical Center's board of directors approved a definitive agreement to become a full member of Great Neck, N.Y.-based North Shore-LIJ Health System following completion of contractual approvals and governmental regulatory review.

6. Johns Hopkins Medicine, Chinese diagnostic company partner
Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore partnered with Chinese company DIAN Diagnostics to spread DIAN's pathology lab services nationwide.

7. Woman's Hospital, Mary Bird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center team up for women's cancer care
Mary Bird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center and Woman's Hospital, both in Baton Rouge, La., will affiliate to create a new system of care that will promote a higher degree of physician collaboration, coordination and disease management for patients with breast and gynecological cancers.

8. Tenet, Baylor Scott & White to partner for value-based care at 5 hospitals
Baylor Scott & White Health and Tenet Healthcare, both based in Dallas, announced plans to partner at five Texas hospitals, to focus on integrated, value-based care delivery.

9. Humana to sell Concentra unit for $1B
Louisville, Ky.-based health insurer Humana is selling Concentra, its occupational health and physical therapy services arm, for $1.06 billion.

10. PinnacleHealth, Hershey Medical Center merger moves forward
The Penn State Board of Trustees approved a proposal to combine Penn State Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center and Harrisburg, Pa.-based PinnacleHealth System to form a new health enterprise under the umbrella of Penn State Health.

11. UC San Diego in partnership talks with Eisenhower Medical Center
UC San Diego Health System and Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., are pursing a partnership deal.

12. Banner Health to buy another Arizona hospital
Phoenix-based nonprofit Banner Health signed a letter of intent to purchase Mogollon Health Alliance, which operates Payson (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center.

13. Tenet-United Surgical Partners JV: Tenet to take control of USPI over 5 years
Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare signed a definitive agreement to form a joint venture with United Surgical Partners International to create the largest provider of ambulatory surgery in the U.S.

14. New California network mimics Kaiser's approach
UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco and Walnut Creek, Calif.-based John Muir Health finalized an affiliation agreement, created a jointly owned network and set their sights on developing a health insurance plan.

15. Silverton Health in partnership talks with Legacy Health
Silverton (Ore.) Health is in affiliation discussions with Legacy Health in Portland, Ore.

16. 5 rural hospitals form collaborative in Maine
Five rural hospitals in Maine teamed up to form the Maine Rural Health Collaborative, which will help the organizations face challenges presented by the shifting healthcare landscape and rural patient population.

17. Memorial Hospital and Guthrie to affiliate April 1
Memorial Hospital in Towanda, Pa., will be affiliated with Guthrie, a three-hospital system based in Sayre, Pa., as of April 1.

18. Benefis to purchase Teton Medical Center for $500k
Teton Medical Center in Choteau, Mont., will be sold to Great Falls, Mont.-based Benefis Health System for $500,000.

19. Scripps Health purchases Imaging Healthcare Specialists
La Jolla, Calif.-based Scripps Health signed a purchase agreement with Imaging Healthcare Specialists, a network of ambulatory radiology centers with eight locations across San Diego and Riverside counties.

20. Prime backs out of controversial hospital deal in California
Prime Healthcare Services, a for-profit hospital operator based in Ontario, Calif., decided to pass on a deal to acquire Los Altos, Calif.-based Daughters of Charity Health System's hospitals.

21. Novant, UVA Health in talks to create new system in Virginia
Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health and University of Virginia Health System, based in Charlottesville, signed a non-binding letter of intent to create a new regional health system in Northern Virginia.

22. Partners completes controversial acquisition of medical group
Boston-based Partners HealthCare completed its takeover of Harbor Medical Associates.

23. Saint Catherine property sold for $550k
The former site of Saint Catherine Medical Center Fountain Springs in Ashland, Pa., was sold to Ashland Properties, an affiliate of San Clemente, Calif.-based Sovereign Health Group.

24. CHS to divest 2 South Carolina hospitals
Subsidiaries of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems executed a definitive agreement to divest 59-bed Chesterfield General Hospital in Cheraw, S.C., and 102-bed Marlboro Park Hospital in Bennettsville, S.C.

25. Prime Healthcare continues aggressive growth strategy
Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services is pushing full force ahead on its growth strategy, announcing it completed the purchase of two hospitals and entered into an agreement to acquire another.

26. Western Missouri Medical Center and Saint Luke's Health System agree to 3-year clinical affiliation
Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, Mo., agreed to enter into a three-year clinical affiliation with Kansas City, Mo.-based Saint Luke's Health System.

27. University Hospitals eyes adding Samaritan Regional Health System
Cleveland-based University Hospitals and Samaritan Regional Health System, based in Ashland, Ohio, are taking steps toward signing a letter of intent to integrate SRHS into the UH system.

28. CHS acquires ownership of 5-hospital joint venture in Oklahoma
Subsidiaries of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems acquired full ownership of five hospitals in Oklahoma.

29. Riverview Hospital Association finalizes merger with Aspirus
Riverview Hospital Association in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and Wausau, Wis.-based Aspirus finalized a merger.

30. Lancaster General Health, UPHS take next step toward final deal
Lancaster (Pa.) General Health and Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania Health System signed a non-binding letter of intent to integrate the two organizations.

31. Noble Hospital, Baystate Health exploring affiliation
Boards of Noble Hospital in Westfield, Mass., and Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health authorized the organizations to sign a letter of intent to explore Noble becoming a member of Baystate Health.
