MGMA polled 1,569 respondents for its national Stat poll, which  is available to all healthcare leaders and covers topics such as practice management and new legislation.

Here is how organizations are using text messaging:

1. The majority (68 percent) of respondents send appointment reminders to patients via text after receiving patient opt-in and consent. The platform is used exclusively for reminders, not for scheduling or changing appointments.

2. Of the 24 percent of respondents who indicated their organizations do not use text messaging for appointments, many opt for email or phone call reminders because they believe text messaging is too expensive.

3. Seven percent of respondents are considering implementing text message appointment reminders, while 1 percent were unsure.
