LSU Foundation plans to redevelop Charity Hospital after 12 year vacancy

Baton Rouge, La.-based Louisiana State University and the LSU Foundation are looking to redevelop Charity Hospital in New Orleans, which has been closed since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in 2005, according to The New Orleans Advocate.

The LSU Real Estate and Facilities Foundation, a subsidiary of the LSU Foundation, commissioned a land-use study of the shuttered, 20-story building by the Chicago-based Urban Land Institute that will be completed by the end of the year. A 16-member board made up of LSU, foundation and government officials will make decisions about what to do with the building based on findings from the study.

There have been many public and private development ideas for the building over last 12 years, including a plan by New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, D, to move city hall and municipal courts into the former hospital. That plan eventually fell through after running into opposition.
