The Maine Department of Health and Human Services granted the hospital a “certificate of need,” which was required to begin construction.

The expansion project will include adding 130 patient rooms, 20 operating rooms and a new parking garage to the medical center.

Hospital officials said that ground breaking could occur as early as March 2018. The expansion is expected to be complete in 2022.
