Mr. Stevens has served as CFO since 2014 and has held regional CFO positions at the company in North and South America as well as leadership roles throughout Asia, including in China, Singapore and Thailand.

Dhivya Suryadevara, vice president of corporate finance, will take over for Mr. Stevens Sept. 1, though Mr. Stevens will continue to serve as an adviser at GM until he retires March 1, 2019.

“It’s great to see promotion from within, and Suryadevara is clearly a rising star in the company,” Rebecca Lindland, a senior analyst with Kelley Blue Book, told CNBC. “Adding another talented, smart female to the executive leadership team reminds women that engaging opportunities continue to open up in automotive boardrooms.”
