McDonald's plans layoffs to help reel in $500M

Layoffs are on deck for corporate positions at McDonald's as the fast food chain rolls out its $500 million restructuring plan, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the planned layoffs, which were announced in a June 6 memo and video sent to corporate employees and franchisees. McDonald's spokesperson Terri Hickey told the Chicago Tribune through the "planned actions," the company hopes to alleviate $500 million in expenses by 2019.

McDonald's did not disclose the amount of corporate jobs that will be affected. The anticipated layoffs come as McDonald's opened its new headquarters in Chicago June 4.

"We are always evaluating ways to better serve our customers and continue to grow our business. With that in mind, we are putting into place a new U.S. field structure that will better support our franchisees and will ensure McDonald's continues on a path to being more dynamic, nimble and competitive," Ms. Hickey said in a statement to the publication.
