Anthem changes HMO, PPO offerings in Kentucky

Indianapolis-based payer Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will offer preferred provider organization plans in 46 Kentucky counties and health maintenance organization plans in 74 counties on the state's federal exchange for coverage beginning Jan. 1.

Anthem is the only health insurer in Kentucky to sell Affordable Care Act exchange plans in all 120 counties. Earlier this month, the federal government granted cautious approval for Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) to unplug the state's health exchange Kynect, rerouting enrollees to the federal Healthcare.gov exchange.

Mark Robinson, an Anthem spokesperson, said amid "recent changes in the healthcare environment, Anthem has responded" with the health plan changes. Four carriers that offered plans on Kentucky's exchange in 2016 will leave the marketplace next year — Aetna, WellCare, Baptist Health and UnitedHealthcare.
