Two people, including a hospital caregiver, have died after a July 2 shooting in the parking garage of Mercy Hospital Springfield (Mo.).
Springfield Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired around 4:50 a.m. in a hospital parking garage, where they located two people with gunshot wounds, the police spokesperson said. One person died at the scene and the other later died at a hospital. There is no ongoing threat to the public.
It is believed to be a murder-suicide, a spokesperson for the Springfield Police Department said in a statement shared with Becker’s.
“We were shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic event on our campus early this morning involving one of our caregivers,” a hospital spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker’s. “We are actively working with Springfield police to assist in their investigation and are unable to provide more information at this time.”
The hospital spokesperson said the safety of its patients, visitors and caregivers remains the highest priority.
“This is a difficult time for our team members, and we are providing additional support from our spiritual care team,” the spokesperson said.
