Epic President Sumit Rana will step down from the electronic health record company Aug. 14 after more than two decades with the organization.
In an email sent to Epic employees July 3 and shared with Becker’s, Mr. Rana said he is leaving the company following the death of his father so he can spend more time with his family and support his mother, who lives in India. He has served as Epic’s president since 2024, according to his LinkedIn profile, after joining the EHR vendor in 1998 as a software developer.
“My father passed away, and it’s been a difficult time for our family,” Mr. Rana wrote. “My mother lives in India, and this change will allow me to be present for her and help her navigate this tender chapter. It will also let me devote more of my time and my whole heart to my wife and kids.”
Mr. Rana described Epic as “the best thing that ever happened to me” and thanked employees for their work.
“I am so proud of everything we’ve accomplished together,” he wrote. “And for all that success, I believe Epic’s best days are still ahead.”
In a statement shared with Becker’s, an Epic spokesperson praised Mr. Rana’s contributions to the company.
“Sumit Rana is outstanding and we deeply appreciate all the amazing value he has provided to our customers, our staff, and our company,” the spokesperson said. “We will always consider him a great friend to Epic.”
The spokesperson said a small group of leaders mentored by Mr. Rana and others will assume additional responsibilities following his departure.
“For almost 50 years, our culture has been, and continues to be, one of growing new leaders who are capable of strong contributions to our future,” the spokesperson said.
Epic said it will not be granting interviews or responding to additional questions about the leadership change.
