4.2M Americans eligible for $0 premiums on ACA marketplace

Twenty-seven percent of uninsured Americans, or 4.2 million people, are eligible to purchase a bronze plan with a $0 monthly premium off the ACA marketplace for 2019, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The $0 premiums are available thanks to tax credits that subsidize coverage on the marketplace. The availability of free bronze plans varies across states. For instance, 5 percent of potential uninsured marketplace enrollees in Washington and Indiana could access free bronze plans, while 45 percent of the same population could in Delaware, Iowa, Nebraska and Utah.

Despite the free premiums, bronze plans have an average deductible of $6,258, according to KFF. In addition, Americans eligible for $0 bronze plans could receive significant cost-sharing assistance by opting for a higher premium silver plan instead.
