Missouri Senate President Steps Down to Become Hospital CEO

Missouri State Sen. Charlie Shields will be stepping down as senate president pro tem to become CEO of 102-bed Truman Medical Center-Lakewood in Kansas City, Mo., according to a report by the Examiner.

The 50-year-old Republican politician cannot run again, due to term limits, but has experience in healthcare. In addition to his senate duties, Mr. Shields has been chief communications officer at another healthcare system, Heartland Health, which runs 314-bed Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

Truman Medical Centers President and CEO John Bluford welcomed Mr. Shields, saying: "His 17 years of combined experience in healthcare and legislative leadership working with publicly funded health programs position him well to work on new and creative care delivery models facilitated by the new health reform legislation."
