Job opening: COO for UK HealthCare

The University of Kentucky is seeking a dynamic leader to propel UK HealthCare to the next level of advanced medicine, continue to build on our extraordinary growth, and serve as the enterprise-wide Chief Operations Officer (COO). Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, the COO will be responsible for operationalizing UK HealthCare’s vision to become one of the nation’s best health systems.

The COO oversees the operations for UK HealthCare, the university’s academic health system which includes the flagship Albert B. Chandler Hospital, Kentucky Children’s Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, Eastern State Hospital, numerous ambulatory clinics, community partnerships (i.e. Lexington Clinic and Lexington Surgery Center) and any future hospital and provider practices that may be acquired. It is critical for the success of this position to work in a collaborative dyad with the Chief Physician Executive to strategically implement clinical and operational best practices, innovate new support systems throughout the health care enterprise and cultivate multiple types of care under one unified mission. The COO will be the senior operations leader on UKHC’s leadership team working with system hospital CEOs, clinical leadership, and other key operational leadership.

The primary responsibilities will include: 

  • Lead UK HealthCare hospital and ambulatory operations including support functions such as information technology, supply chain and facilities management. 
  • Facilitate growth operationally, systematically and with physical space/location.
  • Implement the strategic plan within the enterprise operations.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of areas of responsibility including meeting financial goals, budget development, and monitoring volume and productivity. 
  • Manage the configuration of clinical services (service lines) across the health system.
  • Create, enhance and maintain pivotal relationships by collaborating on specific goals for each partner and influencing operational plans for each partnership.
  • Promote an environment for continuous process improvement as well as financial and operational efficiencies. 
  • Use data and research to develop and implement innovative, thoughtful solutions to optimize business performance while maintaining excellent patient care.
  • Build a shared sense of accountability across the enterprise and collaborate on the development of incentives and systems that yield and measure optimal performance.
  • Work with the senior leadership team to support the UK’s tripartite mission of excellence in research, education and clinical care.
