Here are nine hospital and health system deals announced or completed in Pennsylvania over the last 12 months:
1. Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke’s University Health Network has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Grand View Health in Sellersville, Pa. St. Luke’s is a $4 billion regional system with 15 hospitals and more than 20,000 employees. Grand View was established in 1913 as Bucks County’s first hospital. The transaction is expected to close in mid-to-late 2025, pending regulatory reviews and closing conditions.
2. Tenor Health Partners, a hospital turnaround company, and Medical Properties Trust reached an agreement in December to acquire Dallas-based Steward Health Care’s Sharon (Pa.) Regional Medical Center. The hospital closed Jan. 5 but could reopen soon should the Tenor Health deal go through.
3. Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health and Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network merged Aug. 1. The combination created one of the 15 largest nonprofit health systems in the U.S., with 32 hospitals and more than 700 sites of care.
4. Doylestown (Pa.) Health and Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania Health System in August signed a definitive agreement for Doylestown to become part of Penn Medicine, a six-hospital system. Pending final federal and state approvals, the systems aim to integrate clinical care and operations by early 2025.
5. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems announced plans to sell its three Pennsylvania hospitals to nonprofit organization WoodBridge Healthcare in July. The $120 million deal was anticipated to close in the fourth quarter but collapsed in November due to WoodBridge’s inability to satisfy funding requirements. CHS is evaluate other options for the three-hospital system, Commonwealth Health.
6. Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings and CHA Partners signed a letter of intent in August for CHA to acquire Upland, Pa.-based Crozer Health. The deal, which would have transitioned Crozer’s four hospitals back to nonprofit status, reportedly collapsed in October. Prospect, a for-profit system, has been trying to sell Crozer for years. Wilmington, Del.-based ChristianaCare also scrapped plans to acquire the system in 2022.
7. Risant Health, part of Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente, acquired Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health, a 10-hospital system, on March 31. Risant also acquired Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health last year and said it plans to acquire three to four more community-based health systems over the next four to five years.
8. Washington (Pa.) Health, a two-hospital system, joined Pittsburgh-based UPMC in June. UPMC will invest at least $300 million over the next 10 years to improve services at the two hospitals, which have been rebranded as UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene hospitals.
9. WellSpan Health acquired Lewisburg, Pa.-based Evangelical Community Hospital, effective July 8. York, Pa.-based WellSpan now includes eight hospitals and more than 21,000 team members, including 2,000 employed providers.
