The following healthcare mergers, acquisitions and general transactions took place or were announced within the past week.

1. West Georgia Health to Join WellStar Health System
LaGrange-based West Georgia Health signed a formal letter of intent to join with Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health System, the largest nonprofit community health system in the state.

2. Merit Health expands footprint by adding another Mississippi hospital
Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg, Miss., officially became a member of Jackson, Miss.-based Merit Health, which is now comprised of 12 hospitals, making it Mississippi's largest healthcare system.

3. ValleyCare becomes subsidiary of Stanford Health Care
Pleasanton, Calif.-based ValleyCare Health System and Stanford (Calif.) Health Care finalized their affiliation agreement.

4. Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, local Trinity Health organizations create Saint Joseph Health System
Mishawaka, Ind.-based Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center and several other local healthcare organizations under parent company Trinity Health, based in Livonia, Mich., are merging to create one coordinated health system called Saint Joseph Health System

5. Bon Secours Charity Health System joins forces with Westchester Medical Center
Suffern, N.Y.-based Bon Secours Charity Health System and Westchester Medical Center, a Valhalla, N.Y.-based safety-net hospital, signed a joint venture agreement with a goal of providing improved health services in their region.

6. Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines to acquire Skiff Medical Center
Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines and Skiff Medical Center, a 48-bed hospital in Newton, Iowa, reached an agreement for Skiff to become a fully owned Mercy hospital.

7. Piedmont Healthcare to add Newton Medical Center to network
Atlanta-based Piedmont Healthcare and Covington, Ga.-based Newton Medical Center announced both organizations have agreed to terms of a long-term lease agreement to add Newton to the Piedmont system.
