Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines to acquire Skiff Medical Center: 3 things to know

Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines and Skiff Medical Center, a 48-bed hospital in Newton, Iowa, have reached an agreement for Skiff to become a fully owned Mercy hospital.

Here are three things to know about the agreement.

1. Earlier this week, the Newton City Council conducted a public hearing about the proposed acquisition and unanimously approved the agreement.

2. Skiff CEO Brett Altman said in a statement that the integration "ensures residents of Newton and JasperCounty will continue to have access to the local hospital which has served their community for more than 90 years." He said patients also will benefit  from greater access to specialized care.

3. The proposed deal is expected to close on or before July 1.
