Memorial Hermann drops ‘interim’ from CEO Charles Stokes’ title

Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System named Charles D. Stokes, BSN, RN, its permanent president and CEO, effective immediately. He has been serving as interim leader, following the unexpected departure of Benjamin K. Chu, MD, in June.

Mr. Stokes most recently served as executive vice president and COO of the 17-hospital health system. He joined Memorial Hermann in 2008, prior to which he was president of North Mississippi Medical Center, in Tupelo. He also previously served as COO for three other health systems and as vice president of operations for St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital/Texas Heart Institute in Houston.

Mr. Stokes is the chairman of the American College of Healthcare Executives’ board of governors. He served as an ACHE faculty member for 10 years. He is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Mr. Stokes holds a master’s degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
