CEO William Caron Jr. plans to retire at the end of 2020, while President Richard Petersen will retire June 30, 2021. Mr. Petersen told the Press Herald that he plans to stay on for six more months after Mr. Caron retires to prevent MaineHealth from having to simultaneously replace its top leaders.
Mr. Caron has served as CEO of MaineHealth since 2000. Mr. Petersen became president of the system in January, before which he served as president and CEO of MaineHealth’s flagship Maine Medical Center in Portland. Mr. Petersen continued to serve as CEO of the hospital when he became president of the system.
During their tenures, MaineHealth completed a process of centralizing the health system, including bringing all hospital budgets under one umbrella. Also, Maine Medical Center completed the planning phase of a five-year, $534 million expansion and renovation project in 2018.
MaineHealth’s board of trustees has formed an executive search committee to identify replacements.
