G. Duncan Finlay, MD, former physician and CEO of Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Health Care System has died at 85 years old.
Dr. Finlay joined SMH as a pulmonologist in 1972, and served as chief of staff in the 1980s. He later served as the system’s vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer before becoming president and CEO in 2000, during which he navigated the system through a time of “turmoil and change,” according to a July 25 news release shared with Becker’s.
“Dr. Finlay was a brilliant star in our health system and community for more than three decades,” Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder said in the release. “He was a wonderful mentor and friend to so many of us. We owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for the major role he played in SMH’s history.”
Dr. Finlay retired from SMH in 2005, but continued to serve in leadership positions for other institutions, such as president and CEO of the F.A.R. Institute.
