Fall will bring leadership shifts at hospitals and health systems of varying sizes across the U.S., with the first of the transitions taking effect in late August.
Several of the changes stem from previously announced retirements, with successors set to take over in September and October. Others follow exits that leave systems searching for permanent leaders.
Here are eight shifts to note, all reported by Becker’s this year:
Note: This list is not exhaustive.
1. Amy Shlossman becomes executive vice president and CEO of Portland-based Oregon Health & Science University on Aug. 31, joining from Baltimore-based LifeBridge Health. She takes over a system that has lacked a permanent leader since Tarek Salaway was terminated April 3, less than four months after becoming CEO in mid-December. Chief Medical Officer Renee Edwards, MD, has served as acting CEO.
2. Jenn Schwartz becomes president and CEO of Wilmington, Del.-based ChristianaCare on Sept. 1. Ms. Schwartz, the system’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer, succeeds Janice Nevin, MD, who retires the same day after 12 years in the role and more than two decades with the system.
3. Winjie Miao becomes CEO of Arlington-based Texas Health Resources in September. She has served as president since April 5, a role created to designate the next chief executive. Ms. Miao succeeds Barclay Berdan, who retires after four decades with the 29-hospital system, including 12 years as CEO.
4. Jennifer Eslinger becomes president and CEO of Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health on Sept. 21. Ms. Eslinger succeeds Daryl Tol, who has served as acting president and CEO since Jan. 1, when Cliff Deveny, MD, moved to CEO emeritus and strategic adviser. Mr. Tol will remain president and CEO of Health Assurance Transformation Co., which acquired Summa Health.
5. Joey Hester retires in September as CEO of Medical Center Enterprise in Alabama, capping a 50-year healthcare career. A successor has not been named. The hospital said in June that a search would begin shortly.
6. Mike Dandorph steps down Sept. 30 as president and CEO of Burlington, Mass.-based Tufts Medicine. His departure, announced alongside the CFO’s, comes as the system enters the next phase of its financial turnaround. COO Phil Okala has been appointed acting president and CEO.
7. Madeline Bell, BSN, retires Oct. 1 as CEO of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Joseph Mitchell, MD, the hospital’s president, succeeds her.
8. Ben Spence becomes president and CEO of Fort Myers, Fla.-based Lee Health on Oct. 1. Mr. Spence, the system’s COO, succeeds Larry Antonucci, MD, who retires Sept. 30 after nine years leading the system.
