Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems has appointed Kevin Hammons as CEO and Jason Johnson as executive vice president and CFO, effective Dec. 12. Both Mr. Hammons and Mr. Johnson have been serving in these roles on an interim basis since Oct. 1.
Seven things to know:
1. The appointments follow the Sept. 30 retirement of Tim Hingtgen, who served as CEO since 2021.
2. Mr. Hammons, who was also appointed to serve as a member of the board of directors, previously served as the health system’s CFO since January 2020. He had been serving as president and interim CEO for the last two months.
3. Mr. Hammons joined CHS in 1997, working in various financial reporting roles, and was promoted to vice president and chief accounting officer in 2012, later becoming senior vice president. In 2017, he was named assistant CFO and he served as treasurer from 2018 through 2019. He also led the company’s recent enterprise resource planning implementation, Project Empower, which is expected to save the company up to $60 million for 2025.
4. Mr. Johnson most recently served as senior vice president and chief accounting officer. He joined the health system in 2012 as vice president and assistant corporate controller and was promoted to vice president, corporate controller in 2018. He became chief accounting officer in 2019.
5. Phillip Posey, who currently serves as vice president of accounting and financial reporting, has been appointed senior vice president and chief accounting officer, effective Jan. 1, 2026. He will serve as CHS’ principal accounting officer and joined the company in 2020 after previously holding positions at Deloitte & Touche and at a publicly traded real estate investment trust.
6. CHS has divested ownership in seven hospitals this year and plans to sell three more. It also sold various lab assets across 13 states to Labcorp for $194 million.
7. The health system owns or leases 70 hospitals with more than 10,000 beds and operates more than 1,000 care sites across 14 states.
