Roland Knox, CEO of Mount Graham Regional Medical Center in Safford, Ariz., will retire in the first week of October, Eastern Arizona Courier reported Aug. 29.

He took an extended leave of absence in May due to a health issue, and Chief Medical Officer Bart Carter, MD, was then named interim CEO.

Mr. Knox told attendees at an Aug. 27 community luncheon at the hospital that his absence was due to a stroke he suffered on April 21, the Courier reported.

He told Becker’s Sept. 4 that it has been an honor to serve as the hospital’s CEO.

“The board and leadership focus has always been and will remain to be the healthcare needs of the communities we serve,” Mr. Knox said. “The challenges in providing quality healthcare in rural America are many, but MGRMC is prepared and ready to stay independent as a community healthcare provider.”

He joined Mount Graham Regional Medical Center in 2000, left to work at Northern Cochise Community Hospital in Willcox, Ariz., for a few years, and returned as CEO in 2019.
