Tech salaries grew 7.7% last year: 6 things to know

The future of the technology job in the U.S. appears to be strong. From 2014 to 2015, the average technology salary in the U.S. increased from $89,450 to $96,370, a 7.7 percent year-over-year increase, according to a survey from tech career website Dice.

The online survey gathered responses from more than 16,000 employed technology professionals.

Here are six key findings from the survey.

1. Between 2011 and 2015, the average tech salary increased 18.5 percent, from $81,327 to $96,370.

2. Nearly half (48 percent) of the respondents said they received a salary increase due to upward mobility in their company. Nearly one-quarter of respondents said they received a salary increase due to changing employers.

3. The average bonus is also on the rise for the tech industry: In 2015, the $10,194 average bonus is 7 percent higher than 2014's average bonus.

4. Thirty-seven percent of respondents reported receiving a bonus in 2015, which is unchanged from 2014.

5. Contract workers in technology reported a 5 percent increase in hourly compensation, averaging $70.26 per hour.

6. In 2015, tech salaries in these six metro areas reached six-figures: Silicon Valley ($118,243), New York ($106,263), Los Angeles ($105,091), Boston ($103,675), Seattle ($103,309), Baltimore/Washington, D.C. ($102,873), Minneapolis ($100,379) and Portland, Ore. ($100,309).
